Everyone may be talking about the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, especially with all the speculation on Kate Middleton’s pregnancy, but it’s Prince Harry and Kate’s sister Pippa Middleton who are inspiring expecting couples. Official figures in the UK state that the most popular name for baby boys in England and Wales were Harry – for the first time ever. Harry over took other favorites like Oliver, Jack and Alfie. Over 7,500 babies were christened after William’s younger brother, making Harry the most popular name for either sex in the UK. Runner up positions included traditional Biblical names like Jacob and James.
For the girls, Amelia hit the number one stop, beating the usual popular choices like Olivia, Sophie and Emily. Pippa is rather lower down, but is still ahead of Kate as the choice for a girl’s baby name. One reason for the popularity of the name Harry could also have come from the popularity of the Harry Potter books, and has been rising in popularity since their publication. However, lately it seems the name’s rise to the top has more to do with the red-haired prince than the wand-waving Wizard. The name William fell in the charts to 10 places, and surprisingly Kate too also fell down the charts – despite the couple’s royal wedding.
