Schalke 04 and Dortmund registered their first Champion League victories during Group Matchday 1 competition. Schalke doubled Olympiacos 2-1, while Dortmund defeated Ajax Amsterdam 1-0.
Dortmund directed the tempo of the match, but was often unsuccessful agains Ajax keeper Kenneth Vemeer. Dortmund keeperwas no slouch either, keeping a clean sheet on several occasions.
Dortmund's goal came in the 87th minute, when Gruendogan moving up the wing changed sides and passed the ball to Lukasz Piszczek, who tranfered the ball with his head to the 11 meter spot, where Robert Lewandowski was in place and put the ball away for the 1-0 lead. The 1-0 win places Dortmund into second place in Group D.
Real Madrid defeated Manchester City in the other Group D match 3-2. Renaldo scored the winner just before the end of the match. This was a heartbreaker for Manchester City, which lead twice during the match.
Goals by Hoewedes and Huntelaar ensured Schalke's win over Olympiacos. The match was scoreless until the 41st minute.
Schalke's first goal in the 41st minute was a result of a corner kick, taken by Jefferson Farfan from the right side. Farfan placed the ball precisely into the five meter area where Hoewedes managed to lose Greek defender Holebas and with a powerful header, put the ball past the goal line for the 1-0 lead.
In the second half Olympiacos tied the match in the 58th minute, when a goal kick by Schalke keeper Lars Unnerstal was too short and landed on the feet of Olympiaco's Djebbour. Papadopoulos. His ball deflected to Abdoun, after Unnerstal ran interference. Abdoun wasted no time and pushed it into the target for the equalizer.
Not to be outdone, Schalke came right back with yet another go ahead goal. After a quick combination from Jones to Holtby and then Huntelaar, the Dutch international fired a shot from about 12 meters for the 2-1 lead.
Schalke shares the top of Group B with Arsenal, which won its match in Montpellier.
Dortmund is arguably in the hardest group of the three Bundesliga contenders, with Real Madrid and Manchester City in its group.
The third of the Bundesliga clubs plays tomorrow when Bayern Muenchen hosts Valencia in Group F action. Bayern should have a full complement of players, including Frank Ribery,and Bastian Schweinsteiger.
