Limited information is available following an attack by the Taliban on Camp Bastion in Afghanistan where Prince Harry is stationed. The attack on a British air base left two U.S. Marines dead as well as leaving additional troops wounded. Martyn Crighton, spokesman for the NATO-led forces said, “Prince Harry was never in any danger.”

Boston.com reports, “Lt. Col. Stewart Upton, a spokesman at Camp Leatherneck, a U.S. Marine based adjacent to the air base, confirmed the attack and said two coalition service members had been killed but he did not specify their nationalities.”

Although Prince Harry has returned to the war in Afghanistan, the publicity he received following his trip to Las Vegas that produced nude photos of him are still fresh in the public’s eye. The youngest son of Princess Diana has created quite a reputation for being a playboy following the release of the photographs. This is not the image the Royal Family wants the public to see. The 27-year old is third in line for the throne after his father, Prince Charles, and older brother, Prince William. The Royal Family wants the public to be proud of the young prince and hope that his time spent in Afghanistan will help curtail some of the negative press.

News of the attack in Afghanistan has raised concerns that the Prince is fighting a very serious war and his life is in jeopardy while he is serving his country. Insurgents breached the perimeter of Camp Bastion and used rocket-propelled grenades, mortars and hand guns in their attack. The Prince is known as Capt. Harry Wales by his fellow military members and is serving his second tour in Afghanistan in a four month combat deployment. Capt. Wales is a gunner on an Apache helicopter.

Violent attacks in the Muslim world have continued all week in outrage over a film that mocks their prophet. U.S. officials have denounced violence as a method to protest the film. President Barack Obama said that Washington would “stand fast” against violence. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said, “To us, to me personally, this video is disgusting and reprehensible. It appears to have a deeply cynical purpose to denigrate a great religion and provoke rage. But as we said yesterday, there is no justification -none at all- for responding to this video with violence.”

At this time there is no indication that the attack in Afghanistan is tied to the other attacks in the Muslim world. However, this situation is being watched closely. More information should be released as it becomes available.

Hellmand Province along with Kandahar province are hotbeds for the insurgency in Afghanistan and insurgent attacks in that area are relatively common. Prince Harry is scheduled to fly attack helicopters out of Camp Bastion. Thanks for the report.
