Boston Massachusetts.New York Yankees infielder and team captain Derrk Jeter, 38, is tied for tenth place in Major League Baseball all time base hits list with former New York and San Francisco Giants and New York Mets outfielder Willie Mays also nicknamed The Say Hey Kid during his time with New York Giants with 3,283 base hits.

Jeter got the historic base hit on Thursday night in Boston in the seventh inning off Boston pitcher Junichi Tazawa that scored from second base teammate Steve Pearce to give the New Yorkers a 2-0 lead over their divisional rival Boston Red Sox.

Derek had aggravated an ankle injury he suffered last week in Tampa on Wednesday night in the eighth inning. Jeter insisted despite the sprained ankle he was going to play on Thursday. His manager Joe Girardi was not sure if Jeter was going to play until game time when Jeter was placed in the lineup as a designated hitter.

Jeter is 30 base hits behind Eddie Collins for ninth place on baseball all time base hits list. To get 30 base hits within the remaining games of the 2012 regular baseball season should be a challenge for him to reach that goal.

He probably needs to have 30 more hits because the Yankees are reeling.

That is true. If the New York Yankees do not make the playoffs I fear Joe Girardi could be fired and the Red Sox nation will have a field day laughing at their rival.
