Photos of the Duchess of Cambridge sunbathing topless with Prince William at a private house in Southern France have been released by the French magazine Closer. Announcing a world exclusive, Closer magazine invited readers to pick up the new edition to enjoy “the photos that the world can't wait to see; the Duchess of Cambridge topless on a guesthouse terrace." This comes shortly after naked photos of Prince Harry were released when he visited Las Vegas recently.

Nudity is not frowned upon in France. Many beaches along the shores are topless beaches. The French do not perceive nudity the same way as other nations. However, publishing these photos has sparked a storm of emotions from the royal family, and the couple has expressed sadness about the photos being released.

"Their Royal Highnesses had every expectation of privacy in the remote house. It is unthinkable that anyone should take such photographs, let alone publish them," a St. James's Palace official in London said. "The incident is reminiscent of the worst excesses of the press and paparazzi during the life of Diana, Princess of Wales, and all the more upsetting to the Duke and Duchess for being so,” reports King5.com.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been put into a spotlight that is undesirable to say the least. British news agencies are refusing to release the photos. "They won't get published in this country, and if I was still an editor I would not be publishing them. There's absolutely no chance whatsoever that they will be published in this country,” former News of the World executive editor Neil Wallis told BBC radio.

This brings the issue of privacy to the forefront. People should be entitled to a sense of privacy in certain situations. Taking a vacation to a private residence should be included on the list of events that should be granted some sense of privacy.

Being a member of the royal family means that no matter where they go, someone will have a camera. Fascination with this young couple around the world is high. Princess Diana was a beloved figure around the world, and hopes are high that the Duchess of Cambridge may be able to fill the empty spot in the hearts of fans. A release of photos of young Kate may mar that image in the minds of fans. However, it may also make them love her even more because they realize she is a real person who is enjoying her new life with her husband.
