Manila – Suspected armed robbers held up Friday morning an armored van carrying multi-million peso cash in a posh Alabang mall in a suburb south of Manila, but alerted security guards valiantly fought them, triggering fierce firefights in broad daylight amid the busy commercial complex, leaving a suspect dead and seven people wounded , including two guards and five mallers, police said.
Police said police special forces scoured at past 10 a.m. the Alabang Town Center in Ayala Alabang, Muntinlupa City to flush out three other suspected robbers who reportedly retreated and holed into the commercial complex, forcing the mall management to close it temporarily until the area is cleared and safe.
Investigators said the robbers waited for the armoured van , which had just picked up from ATC money changer shop collections in duffle bags, one of which reportedly was stashed away by one of the culprits in front of Sterling bank branch along Madrigal Avenue, but were fired upon by heavily armed guards who sensed the robbery. One of the suspects was hit in the head and died while being treated in a nearby hospital, police reports said.
Police sketchy reports said the escaping robbers fired a grenade launcher at the bank as diversionary cover, wounding five mallers.
Armed robberies usually increased before Christmas and Yuletide and strangely caught attention of law enforcers several months before major local and national elections in the islands republic, it was learned.
