A Philippine couple accused of torturing their housemaid for five years were brought by a Senate sergeant-at-arms to their separate detention facilities in Quezon City, Metro Manila, on Thursday afternoon.
Senate President Pro Tempore Jose "Jinggoy" Estrada sought the arrest of Reynold and Analiza Marzan for maltreating their helper that almost blinded her.
The couple, however, surrendered to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in Manila after weeks of hiding. They were transferred to the Senate.
The couple had earlier asked the Quezon City court to allow them to stay at the NBI, but their motion was rejected.
Some jail officials said there will be no special treatment for Reynold, who may spend some time with some 100 inmates in one cell.
Marzan's wife Analiza was brought earlier on Thursday to the female dormitory of Quezon City Police District headquarters at Camp Karingal.
Helper Bonita Baran, who is now under the witness protection program of the government, accused the couple of abusing her
Baran said her employers had hit her repeatedly with plates, vases and a broomstick. She added her female employer pressed a hot flat iron on her face, costing her eyesight.
The Marzans are now facing seven counts of serious physical injuries, two counts of attempted homicide, and serious illegal detention.
