Derweze in Turkmenistan is better known to locals as 'The Door to Hell' because of a man-made fire which has been raging in the desert of Karakum day and night for the last 40-years.

This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk of dated the 13th of September 2012.

It seems it was a 70-m wide crater built by Russian geologists in 1971 while exploring for oil – apparently, the drilling rig gave way and collapsed into a cavern below.

The cavern was filled with natural gas which began to burn and is still burning.

The site is located 260-Km north of Ashgabat which is the capital of Turkmenistan.

President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow had visited the place in April-2010 and had directed that the hole should be closed it remains as it was. Animals graze around the crater and the locals have got used to the sight of a non-stop fire burning 24X7.
