While considered a success, the premiere season of “The X Factor” did not garner the number of viewers it had hoped. Season one winner Melanie Amaro has yet to release her debut album as season two premieres with new faces at the judging table and a whole new batch of singing hopefuls.
In the two hour season premiere LA Reid and Simon Cowell were joined by new judgesand Demi Lovato
The two hour premiere episode was filled with video clips and mash ups of coments from judges and contestants and only 10 auditions aired. The episode covered three cities – Austin, San Francisco, and Providence.
After eleven minutes of various video clips the first singer on the stage was 21 year old Paige Thomas. The nursing student is a mother of a three year old girl whom LA called a star and reminded him of Rihanna. Demi said Paige had amazing stage presence and a superstar. Simon said it was one of his favourite auditions ever because Paige took her job as a mother seriously; Simon added that Paige looked and sounded like a pop star whom he had good feelings about. The judges gave her four yeses.
Shawn Armenta, a 50 year old airline worker, did not fair as well with his original composition “Candy Girl”. Simon called Shawn a mouse trying to be an elephant and was just wrong. Shawn left with a bad attitude.
Simon stopped 13 year old Reed on his first song and asked him to sing a second song. The youngster looked like Justin Bieber but proclaimed he was his own man. Simon noted that he thought Reed was a hard worker, but felt he was a possible future pop star. Demi said that Reed’s stage presence shined and LA said Reed had a lot of talent. Reed got four yeses.
Kaci Newton was not as lucky as young Reed, Simon said that Kaci sound like she was dying when she sang.
San Francisco got off to an unusual start with a man donned in a wedding outfit complete with veil as he performed “Born this Way”. The judges called the performance entertaining and got three yeses; only LA Reid said no.
In his video package former boy band singer Vincent Thomas kept talking about how he played before crowds of 60 thousand in Europe and Asia. After his performance Simon said that in every boy band there was one guy who didn’t sing and that was Vincent.
The three teens who made up Emblem3 made a bold move by auditioning with a song they penned themselves – “Sunset Boulevard”. During the performance the crowd were on their feet, the judges were rocking, and they brought the house down. Britney said it was awesome and funky. LA said that he didn’t like them…he loved them. Demi said the guys were fun to watch and couldn’t wait to hear them on the radio. Simon said that he loved everything about the guys from the time they stepped out on the stage and predicted big things for the band. The guys got four yeses for their performance.
Vocal coach Don Phillip was no stranger to one of the judges…he recorded a duet with her 10 years ago. When he walked out on the stage Britney recognized her old singing partner. Don became very emotional on stage. Simon said that Don did not have a good singing voice and Britney said that Don’s voice did not stand up to “X Factor” standards. Don got four nos for his audition.
Janelle had the crowd going with her audition and LA said he was feeling Janelle. Britney called the performance amazing and Demi said Janelle was on fire. Simon said Janelle was on the money, exciting, and really liked her; adding that she was what’s missing on the radio. Janelle received four yeses for her audition.
The final audition of the night came from Jillian who told a story of being bullied in school. During her audition she broke down. After the performance Demi walked to the stage to hug and chat with Jillian. LA said that he had never heard anyone pour their emotions out in a song like that. Britney called the performance amazing. Simon was speechless and finally uttered only one word…incredible. Jillian got four yeses for her performance.
