Robert Griffin III, popularly known as RG3, has proved himself with an outstanding NFL debut. The American football quarterback for the Washington Redskins of the National Football League (NFL) reached sports headlines right after his first game. He has certainly brought his Heisman Trophy confidence to the New Orleans. Those who saw him play for the first time couldn’t tell if it was his debut performance.
RG3 showed immense responsibility and displayed composure by scrambling only when it was required. He put a good defense against the New Orleans defense with 320 yards passing and two touchdowns.
After the successful debut, RG3 talked about his performance. According to the Boston Globe, he said, “I’ve won a high school state championship and a bowl game in college, but to play in the NFL, the pinnacle of it all, and win your first game against a Hall of Famer in , it’s at the top,” adding, “After the game, (Brees) told me he was proud of me. That’s big for him to say after he just lost the game.”
The New Orleans weren’t expecting such a strong opposition. Their opposition, however, was fairly confident before they attacked them. The Saints also got a positive head start against the New Orleans because their defensive endand line backer Jon Vilma were reinstated into the team. They were initially suspended for their roles in the Saints’ alleged pay-for-pain bounty program. Smith ended up playing for them, while Vilma was not fit due to a knee surgery.
While it was a team effort that got them an edge against the opposition, RG3’s performance and contribution cannot be discounted. He completed his first eight passes. His seventh pass, released just before he was leveled on by safety& hit Pierre Garcon in pace over the middle for an 88-yard touchdown. RG3 threw the second-longest scoring pass by a quarterback making his NFL debut.
According to The Washington Post, Griffin talked about his accomplishment, saying, “It’s great for any quarterback to get a couple of easy passes at the beginning of a game so you can get into a rhythm. They were giving us those looks and I took advantage of them.”
Griffin finished the game with 19 of 26, no interceptions and a passer rating of 139.9.
