Last evening at around 10pm, officers from the West Bloomfield Police Department were dispatched to a home in West Bloomfield Township after familiy members heard a gunshot and left the home.
Arriving officers entered fearing a victim may have been in the home but were met with gunfire from an upstairs bedroom that tore through the door and drywall.
One officer--identified as Patrick O'Rourke, a 12-year veteran of the department--was hit during the attack, which is described by other officers as a deliberate ambush. Returning fire, officers scrambled to safety, carrying O'Rourke to the lawn where they waited for paramedics.
The wounded officer was transported to McLaren Hospital in neighboring Pontiac, where he was later pronounced dead.
The Oakland County Sheriff Department Special Response Team was immediately mobilized, where they attempted to make contact with the gunman. At this hour, the shooter, who has been identified by police as Rick Coley, remains in the home. Shooting has continued through the night, prompting the evacuation of twelve neighboring homes and street closures in the surrounding area.
The reasons for the shooting are unclear. Family members have suggested Coley was upset over a recent difficult divorce.
O'Rourke, a twelve year veteran and member of the deparment's narcotics unit, is survived by his wife and four children. Funeral arrangements are pending.
