Former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel has officially announced that he is running for mayor of Chicago, a post that only recently opened up with Mayor Richard M. Daley's surprise announcement that he wouldn't seek a seventh term. (Nov. 13)

For the first time in 25 years, the Chicago Teachers Union has gone on strike. Union leaders and representatives for the city of Chicago could not reach an agreement before the midnight deadline.

The main reasons that a contract wasn't agreed upon was because of tenure and benefits. It's sort of strange that they were fighting Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel since he looked to help the unions when he was a US Representative for Illinois and the White House Chief of Staff for Pres. Obama before becoming mayor of Chicago.

This strike comes at the wrong time for children because the Chicago Public School system and the teachers agreed upon having a longer school day for the purpose of protecting the children from increased street violence within the city.

Chicago has the highest rate of murder within the United States for adolescents. As an example, nine people were shot in Chicago Friday evening. At a time when the children need a safe haven, administrators have abandonded them, leaving them to be preyed upon in the concrete jungle.

The contingency plan in place is rather faulty. Children will be allowed to attend one of the 144 schools that will be open from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. Transportation will not be provided.

Churches will also be used as safe havens throughout the day. However, the violence within the city proves that the churches within Chicago are not bringing enough spiritual enlightenment to those living within the city.
