President François Hollande of France has bestowed the French Legion of Honor on 70-year old Sir Paul McCartney who is one of the surviving members of the famous Beatles group of the 1960s.
The award, France's highest public award, has been presented for his services to music and it was presented at a private ceremony held at the Élysée Palace.

This prestigious award had been instituted by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 and is usually given to French nationals who have provided distinguished service in the civilian or military life.
However, exceptions are made at times – and earlier recipients from Britain include Queen Elizabeth II, the actor Sir Laurence Olivier, the author Graham Greene and the war veteran Henry Allingham.
