US declares Haqqani network a 'terrorist organisation'

Pakistan has at last opened the supply lines for NATO goods passing from Pakistan to Afghanistan. But the eight month blockage of the supply goods has damaged the US-Pakistan relations very much. There is hatred for Pakistan among the members of congress over the issue of NATO supplies. CIA and Pentagon are also furious over the eight month blockage of supply lines.

The American House of Representatives has cut the military aid to Pakistan by half from $1.3 billion to $650 million. During the debate over the legislation to cut aid, Mr.Ted Poe, a Republican congressman called Pakistan ‘’Benedict Arnold’’, a well known traitor in the American history. The bill to cut aid was proposed by Mr. Ted Poe, who wanted a cut of $1.3 billion but instead settled for $650 million. The resolution now will move to Senate for approval.

Mr. Poe, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee said that Pakistan was the ‘Benedict Arnold’ to America in the war on terror and Pakistanis are disloyal, deceptive and a danger to the United States. Benedict Arnold was a general who defected to the British side in the American war of Independence.

Mr. Poe said that Pakistan, a so-called ally continues to take billions in U.S. aid, while funding the militants who attack Americans and America have kept the money flowing as a result it’s time America turn off the tap. He said that by continuing to provide aid to Pakistan, Americans are funding the enemy, end angering Americans and undermining American efforts in the region and America does not need to pay Pakistan to betray America as Pakistanis are already doing it for free.

In his recent visit to India, US defense Secretary Leon Panetta accused Pakistan of providing safe heavens to terrorists. According to him US patience with Pakistan over the issue of terrorists is running out. Pakistan is accused by India of Mumbai terror attacks in India that killed 166 Indians and injured many more. Admiral Mike Mullen before his retirement stressed that Pakistan uses Haqqani network as a veritable arm. Haqqani network is living in North Waziristan in Pakistan and is capable of doing terrorist acts in entire Afghanistan.

Last week, the Congress has passed a resolution to declare Haqqani network a terrorist organization. If Haqqani network is declared a terrorist organization, there is a chance that US will label Pakistan a country supporting a terrorist organization. If Pakistan is declared a state supporting terrorists by US then not only civilian and military aid by US to Pakistan will be stopped but there will also be economic sanctions imposed on Pakistan. These sanctions will be deleterious for Pakistan and they will convert Pakistan to a rogue state like Iran and North Korea.

Both Pakistan and America are fighting a proxy war in Afghanistan. America believes thatPakistan is supporting Taliban. The big powers of the world are united on this issue that Taliban will not be allowed to gain control of Kabul in the future. The whole world believes that if Pakistan has not provided Taliban safe heavens in Pakistan, it was possible to defeat Taliban militarily and as a result it was possible to bring Taliban on the negotiating table. The UScomplains that Pakistan has not helped the world on the issue of Taliban. It is still possible that Pakistan and US can work together to defeat Taliban.

Pakistan believes that if the control of Kabul comes in the hands of non Taliban regime, it will be anti Pakistan, pro India government thus working against the interests of Pakistan.Pakistan thinks that US is supporting non Taliban elements in Afghanistan which is against the interests of Pakistan. Pakistan also accuses US of supporting India against Pakistan and helping India of increasing its influence in Afghanistan. Pakistan and India are enemies since the last sixty years over the issue of Kashmir and have fought many wars in the past.
