Thomas Mulcair: On Canada's Budget

New Democratic Party leader Thomas Mulcair aimed to energize his troops when he made it clear that New Democrats are ready to form the next Canadian government and now was the time to get started.

“Now is the time to take the next step, to gear up for our biggest fight of all.``

He said that Canadians are now more than ever counting on the New Democrats to unite progressives throughout the country to take on the conservative government. His speech was used to portray the NDP as a credible choice for voters during the next election.

Prime Minister Stephen Harpers conservative government has been in power since 2006, first as a minority government, but was able to form a majority government during the 2011 election.

Despite allegations of robocall voter deception and attacks on almost every issue and legislation passed by conservatives, PM Harper is still seen by most voters as the most trusted leader in the country.

For the first time in its history, the New Democratic Party became the official opposition, moving the Liberal Party into third party status. Most of the NDPs successes came from Quebec and Mulcair believes that this success has to be build on.

The NDP caucus met in Atlantic Canada, where the NDP believes it can make improvements.

“We’re not waiting until 2015 to prove that New Democrats are ready to lead this country. That work starts today.” Mulcair said.

The fall session should prove to be an interesting discord between the governing conservatives and the opposition parties.

The Liberal Party is holding their strategy session in Montebello, Quebec. It has an upcoming leadership race and will work out some policies regarding the economy, the environment and social issues.
