Country staris making headlines for shaving her hair. This isn’t a publicity stunt like the one did; rather, this bold step was taken by Pickler in solidarity and support of a friend. Kelly Pickler’s childhood friend, Summer Miller, is battling cancer and her chemotherapy starts tomorrow. Pickler got rid of her beautiful hair for her great friend who was diagnosed with breast cancer in June.
Pickler referred to the change on Twitter by tweeting yesterday, “It’s been a great life-changing day.”
She followed it up an hour later with a tweet that stated, “Be sure to watch “Good Morning America” tomorrow morning (Sept 5th). You won’t want to miss this!!! ;)”
Those who don't follow her on Twitter and watched today’s "Good Morning America" must have been very surprised to see her sporting a completely different look - a totally shaved head.
Pickler wasn’t hesitant about removing her hair at all. She posted on her Caring Bridge website, “I was told that it was mentally much easier to do it this way than to wake up with my hair on my pillow. I’m really not that apprehensive about shaving my head. It is hair and it will grow back.”
With this small gesture, Kellie Pickler proved to her friend that she is not alone in this tough time. At the same time, she has set a precedent for those who discriminate.
According to ABC News, Pickler also said in a statement, “Cancer does not discriminate,” adding, “If this compels even one person to change their mentality toward waiting until the age of 40 for their mammogram, then it will be worth it.”
Her friend, Miller, has a family history of breast cancer, but she always remained cautious about her self-examinations. When she asked her doctor for a mammogram when she felt something might be wrong, doctors found a tumor. Miller, who is a mother of two, had to undergo a double mastectomy and was declared cancer-free in August. Chemotherapy will ensure that her cancer doesn’t relapse.
Pickler is a sensitive person. She is an active philanthropist and supports St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, where she helps raise funds and gives kids special visits. She participates in charitable events to help raise funds for other organizations as well.
