The Truth About High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)

New CDC report reveals 35.8 million American adults have uncontrolled blood pressure levels

What makes this number so alarming? According to the report most of the 35.8 million Americans with uncontrolled blood pressure had a usual source of health care and insurance coverage.

According to the CDC this condition is the second most serious public health issue. During a conference call with reporters, Dr. Thomas Frieden, MD, MPH. Director of the CDC said that hypertension which is second to tobacco use accounts for $131 billion in health care costs every year and contributes to around 1,000 deaths a day, according to reports in Medpage Today.

Hypertension is the leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease and a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. For the report the CDC used information from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in order to analyze awareness and pharmacological treatment of uncontrolled hypertension among American adults. According to the abstract the report focused on three groups; those who are unaware of their hypertension, those who are aware but not treated with medication, and those who are aware and pharmacologically treated with medication but still have uncontrolled hypertension.

The CDC results revealed hypertension present in American adults, aged 18 and over for the years 2003 to 2010 was estimated at 66.9 million. The other results were as follows:

35. 8 million had uncontrolled high blood pressure

14.1 million were not aware of their blood pressure

5.7 million were aware but not receiving pharmacological treatment

16.0 million were aware and were receiving treatment with medication

The researchers had concluded “uncontrolled hypertension affects nearly 36 million adults in the United States, yet 32 million of these adults have a usual source of health care, and 30 million have health insurance, representing a missed opportunity for hypertension control. The findings in this report can be used to target populations and refine interventions to improve hypertension control. Improved hypertension control will require an expanded effort from patients, health-care providers, and health-care systems.”

Dr. Frieden commented that when your blood pressure is high you have four times greater chance to die from a stroke and three times as likely to die from heart disease as reported by USA Today News.

According to Dr. Frieden there are several reasons why people who are aware of their blood pressure have uncontrolled blood pressure; treatment plan is not ideal, not taking their medication and may have trouble paying for medications.
