Six Legal Practioners in Malawi have been conferred with the status of Senior Counsel (SC), it has been announced.
They are the country’s Attorney General Ralph Kasambara who also doubles as Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs. He is also national director of legal affairs for the ruling People’s Party.
Supreme Court of Appeals Judge Justice Edward Twea, Justice Richard Chinangwa of the High Court, Lawyer Henry Phoya who is Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Law Commissioner Getrude Hiwa and veteran Lawyer Bazuka Mhango, who is also the second deputy director of legal affairs in the Peoples Party.
The announcement made Tuesday September 3 2012 through the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation indicated that the state president Mrs. Joyce Banda has honoured the six legal practitioners effective August 13 2012.
The designation of a legal practitioner as an SC is intended to recognize the legal experts whose standing and achievements justify an expectation on the part of the public and the judiciary that they will provide outstanding services, as counsel, to the administration of justice.
