Manila Fire Officer 1 Luis Valle said some firefighters aboard 20 regular trucks and volunteers throughout Metro Manila rushed to Tutuban mall area in busy Divisoria district tried hard to penetrate the burning building in thick black smoke from flaming textiles, one of the goods said bargain area is known for. Valle said his comrades used gas masks to withstand heavy smoke which he said posed obstacles for them to enter the interior parts of the burning structures. He said they also applied specialized foams to help contain the fire which he said could still last for another day before they fully control it. Police said other than cases of difficulties in breathings by some firefighters, a woman was hurt when hit by falling debris from the burning mall supposedly in its vibrant selling mode in time for the upcoming long Christmas holiday sales for throngs of bargain lover Filipinos who used to frequent low-cost stores and budget bazaars due to hard times ahead.
