There are many different techniques used in treating addiction but one that has been developed more recently is dual diagnosis. The reason this type of treatment was created is that there became a growing number of patients who suffered from both addiction and mental illness. In the past they could only be treated for one or the other problem, which meant they would be bounced around the different systems. A person staying at an addiction center could not be treated at that facility for depression and vice versa. It came to light that the people in these conditions were suffering significantly and failing to achieve full recovery. A type of program was developed that would address the needs of a person that becomes addicted to substances as a result of mental illness.
The main concept behind dual diagnosis is that mental illnesses like depression, anxiety, bi polar disorder, and schizophrenia are interrelated with substance abuse. The two problems exist in relation to one another and influence each other in a way that the two should not be treated separately. A mental illness can be considered a factor leading to the development of an addiction if not simply the main cause itself. Of course many other issues can be at play in the progression of an addiction such as genetics and circumstances, but if someone has a mental illness then this cannot be ignored as one of the strongest factors influencing their addictive behavior.
Special treatment centers for depression develop programs that cater to people that have become addicted to a substance following their struggles with mental illness. Depending on what kind of substance they are struggling with quitting and what particular illness they have, they can get a program that works specifically for them. At a dual diagnosis facility, all their needs will be met in terms of treating their symptoms from both illnesses simultaneously.
