We are always hearing about the kids' back-to -school this and back to school that, so I thought it was time for a back to school checklist for moms. We are the ones who really deserve a new wardrobe and haircuts after a long summer of trying to keep the family entertained and busy.
Tonight is the night before school starts, and so as your little (and not-so-little) ones are busy packing pencil cases and lunch boxes, your No. 1 back-to-school thing to do on the list is to run yourself a nice bubble bath once the kids are in bed tonight. You deserve it! Let yourself luxuriate in the soft water for a while, light a fragrant candle, and sip a favourite beverage. You are a great Mom and you need to take time to refresh and renew - water is a wonderful healing and rejuvenating element.
OK, feeling like a new woman? Not so fast the night is young!
No. 2 on the Mom's back-to-school list is to give yourself a quick but renewing pedicure after the bath - summer feet are often neglected by the end of August, so choose a pretty new colour for September and you will feel like it's your first day of school in the morning! Of course if you can find someone else to give it to you, all the better!
Whether you are a stay-at-home mom or a working mom, or both, we all need a little something special for the first morning the kids are back in school, so treat yourself to that cappuccino delight or chai tea with honey, and add a cinnamon bun for good measure. The No. 3 back-to-school treat is something sweet for a sweet Mommy! You deserve it! No guilt is allowed! Just enjoy and allow yourself to feel as sweet as pie! Because you are!
A little more pampering is in the works for Mom. If it's possible to arrange - if you can go to the salon and get your hair done today on your lunch hour - then do! If at home, give yourself a mayonnaise treatment to bring the shine back and deep condition - lots of lovely recipes for home-made hair masques using household ingredients can be found here:
Giving yourself some loving TLC for your lovely locks would be a perfect thing to-do for No. 4 back to school assignment!
The No. 5 back-to-school treat for Mom would be a two-week, all-expenses-paid vacation if we could have our 'druthers, but failing that, Mom, try to plan to take care of a little job or errand that's been niggling at you on this first day of the new school year.
Whether you spend the day cleaning out the summer porch or shopping for some new clothes for yourself, make it an activity that will give you a feeling of having done something that you've been procrastinating - get that project that's been bugging you all summer done. You will feel like you are on the way to a year full of A-pluses!
Of course the little darlings will be running through the door before you know it with tales of teachers, friends and schoolyard bullies, so if you want to prepare a special treat for their arrival, we won't tell anyone, because we know how it makes your heart happy when you do those extra little things for the children, and that's why you are such a wonderful beloved Mommy!
