The Wimbledon and Olympic champion Serena Williams effortlessly moved into the third round of the US Open after a straight sets 6-2 6-4 victory over Spain's Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez.

However, former champion Venus Williams sister of Serena is out after being defeated 6-2 5-7 7-5 by Angelique Kerber in an epic encounter.

Meanwhile, second seed Agnieszka Radwanska wrestled back from a set down to defeat Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain 4-6 6-3 6-0. In a separate event, Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic also stepped into the third round with a 6-2 6-2 triumph over Sweden’s Sofia Arvidsson.

Serena Willians will face with Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova and Ivanovic is set up to meet 19-year-old Sloane Stephens, the youngest player in the women’s top 50, after the American overwhelm Tatjana Malek of Germany 5-7 6-4 6-4.

Second seed Radwanska will challenge Jelena Jankovic in the third round after the former world number one beat Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino 6-4 6-2.

Fourteenth seed Maria Kirilenko of Russia will encounter Andrea Hlavackova of the Czech Republic after a 6-3 6-2 win over Hungary's Greta Arn
