Hip-hop mogul Chris Lighty, who helped launch the careers of rap superstars such as, and LL Cool J, R&B singer ,was found dead Aug. 30 at his Bronx, NY. apartment. He was 44.
He was found at his home in the Bronx with a gunshot to the head and was pronounced dead there, police said.
No note was recovered, but a 9 mm handgun was found and there was no sign of forced entry, said Paul Browne, New York police spokesman. The shooting appears to be self-inflicted, authorities said.
TMZ reports that he had been in an argument with his ex-wife and shot himself; the duo divorced last year and Lighty hadn't been the same since.
According to The Daily News,after a heated discussion with his wife (who filed for divorce last year), Lighty stepped outside a half hour shy of noon and that is when a gunshot was heard. First responders found Lighty face up on the ground with a 9-mm pistol laying at his side.
The Daily News also reports that Lighty may have been in some financial trouble, owing the IRS $5 million.
Lighty, a member of Boogie Down Productions and the founder of Violator Management (now Primary Violator), had a blog. In his last posting on August 23 called “Chaos and Mayhem,” he wrote about being frustrated with the "rat race we call hip-hop" and "the rumors and ridiculous stories" involving his clients.
Several artists quickly took to Twitter to pay tribute to Lighty, including, who wrote, “R.I.P CHRIS LIGHTY THE MAN THAT SAVED MY LIFE!!!”
Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun wrote, “hard to believe it is true but RIP to my friend Chris Lighty. gone too soon.”
