Wayne Hayden of Ft. Collins, Colorado was given the Sawaya award for Freedom last week in a ceremony honoring his work for honorably discharged veterans, their families and current active military personnel.
Mr. Hayden is the founder and president of Saving-Our-Soldiers, Inc, a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting at risk veterans and their families.
Mr. Hayden is a firm believer in the motto, "Leave No Man Behind" and to that end, has worked with the United Way and Catholic Charites to assist those who need assistance the most.
Mr. Hayden and his followers have assisted in stopping foreclosures and evictions, helping keep utilities on, putting food on the tables, providing school supplies, and an outreach program for veterans who are so desperate they believe suicide is the only answer.
Every penny donated goes towards helping veterans and their families. Neither Mr. Hayden, nor his staff receive any compensation. In fact, some dip into their own limited resources to lend a helping hand.
That being said, Mr. Hayden also stresses that Saving-Our-Soldiers is not a hand out but a hand UP.
This organization relies heavily on donations. Not easy to come by these days. However, Mr. Hayden stresses that in the face of the dishonest veterans organizations that have cropped up in the past few years, his organization is willing to have their finances scrutinized by any and all who wish to help. As Mr. Hayden, himself a disabled veteran stated, "They stood for us, now will you stand for them?"
