Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird signed last August 28 the book of condolences opened by the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa following the sudden demise of The Honorable Jesse M. Robredo, Secretary of the Interior and Local Government.

Philippine Ambassador to Canada Leslie B. Gatan was on hand to receive Minister Baird at the chancery.

Mr. Baird’s visit to the Philippine Embassy was the first by a Canadian Foreign Minister.

In his message, Minister Baird extended “the condolences of the Government of Canada on the loss of a decent man who was making an extraordinary contribution to his country and people.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of the country especially the Secretary’s family and friends,” the Minister wrote.

“On this the mournful occasion, Minister Baird came to the Embassy in person to convey the sympathies of the Canadian people on the loss of a great Filipino public servant. We fully appreciate his kind gesture as a demonstration of genuine Philippines-Canada friendship,” Ambassador Gatan remarked.
