Rugby Sevens will soon be able to boast Olympic sport status, having been accepted into the Olympic family. It is due to debut in Rio 2016. If you have your heart set on supporting our boys then you’ll need the right Rugby Sevens rugby shirts.

Rugby Sevens is to reach new heights in 2016, as the sport has officially been welcomed into the Olympic family.

The acceptance into the Olympic programme will create a new pinnacle for the sport, with the International Olympic Committee having voted emphatically in favour of Rugby Sevens’ inclusion, with 81 representatives voting for, and only eight against.

With team GB’s relatively slow start to the games this year, the inclusion of Rugby Sevens has been welcomed by British Olympic chief Andy Hunt, who believes the sport’s introduction will present an excellent opportunity for Britain to get on the podium.

It bodes extremely well for the GB team’s fortunes that in 2009 the Welsh men’s team won the Rugby Sevens World Cup in Dubai. This, combined with the fact that England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, who all have competitive teams will also be eligible to play for the British team will increase the chances of success.

Rob Andrew, the Rugby Football Union’s elite rugby director, has spoken publicly about just how much the England team are looking forward to joining forces with the other nations.

“The thought of joining with the other home unions to make a unified team GB is particularly exciting, and much like the British Lions team in the 15s game, we are confident inclusion in the team will fill players and coaches with a huge amount of pride.”

Rugby union has been part of the games before with the full 15-man version of the game making its last appearance in 1924, before being dropped from the Olympic schedule. The 15-man version of the game will still remain out in the cold, with no plans to bring the sport back into the Olympic schedule.

If nothing else, the inclusion of the sport will certainly introduce a kaleidoscope of colour into the games with nations from all over the world competing in the sport. The rugby shirts of the respective teams will show just how diverse the game has become.

Along with Rugby Sevens, golf is another sport due to make another appearance at the games, having been dropped by the Olympic Committee in 1904. Although not experiencing such an emphatic vote as Rugby Sevens to be included in Rio, the players are already anticipating that an Olympic gold will not take long to surpass the gravitas of winning a major.

If you’re a big Rugby Sevens fan and can’t wait for the sport’s debut in 2016, get your rugby shirts in advance at Shop Rugby, after all, those four years will fly by!
