In New York’s Staten Island, county fair organizers are making a steadfast effort to avoid the spread of swine flu.
The Staten Island Advance (http://bit.ly/NuYjBZ ) says this year's Richmond County Fair is giving up pig races in reply to a new swine flu strain. In its place, the Labor Day weekend fair will introduce dogs running down an elevated plank and diving into the water.
Hosting the canine caper is former Detroit Tigers pitcherwho owns Ultimate Air Dogs. Fairgoers are encouraged to bring along their dogs if they like to swim, Wilcox said.
The new swine flu strain is relatively mild, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have said. Health organizations have asked people not to pet pigs because some cases have been linked to fairs.
