In some surprising but positive news for the Democratic camp, former Republican governor of Florida Charlie Crist has endorsed President Obama.

Republicans must it this as a slap in the face for Crist to announce his support for the opposition on the eve of the Republican National Convention. To add insult to injure, the GOP shindig is being held in Crist's home state.

Crist, who now classifies himself as an independent, wrote a glowing endorsement for the Tampa Bay Times on Sunday, giving eloquent reasons why he is backing Obama for a second term as president. Here is a slice of that generous support:

"Many have already forgotten how deep and daunting our shared crisis was in the winter of 2009, as President Obama was inaugurated. It was no ordinary challenge, and the president served as the nation's calm through a historically turbulent storm. The president's response was swift, smart and farsighted. He kept his compass pointed due north and relentlessly focused on saving jobs, creating more and helping the many who felt trapped beneath the house of cards that had collapsed upon them."

(Read the rest here"Obama is the right leader for our times.)"

The former governor continued to outline in detail what he thinks the president has done to help move America forward and what needs to be done to end the divisive, polarizing rhetoric in Washington and beyond, so that we can forge ahead in unity for the collective good of the country.

Well, those are my words, but Crist was expounding in a similar vein. I'm sure this coming a few days before the GOP officially descends on Tampa to announce their presidential and vice presidential nominees, give grand speeches to rev up the base and kick off the whirlwind last leg of their campaign must sting a wee bit. Okay, maybe a lot.

I know the Republican spin is going to be "who cares," he is not one of us anymore anyway while the party swiftly tries to minimize his influence on their conservative base. They will say Crist has always been a "lightweight," who couldn't even secure the Senatorial seat, much less sway voters in a national election.

Fox is going to put out one of their daily official polls showing Crist endorsement had absolutely no effect and MSNBC is going to go for the gold in playing up this one.

Prepare for the usual partisan spin either way. Let the real "Hunger Games" continue. Next stop: the Republican National Convention and all those shiny Tampa stripper poles ready and waiting in breathless anticipation for the naughty elephant to hit their town.

The forecasted storm Isaac threatening the area has caused Monday's "festivities" to be postponed, but stay tuned for exclusive candid coverage, even if I have to battle the storm to bring it.
