The excitement was too much for Conservative backbencher Ryan Leef who represents that far north Yukon Territory in the federal parliament. In introducing the Prime Minister who was visiting his riding Leef excitedly and nervously introducedas the "prime minister of cannibal" In response Harper praised the work of the rookie Conservative MP and said:"You've confirmed some rumours about me, I think." While the opposition may desire that Harper should devour a few of his own comrades none hve actually accused him of cannabilism. Favoritism and authoritarianism are a few of the "isms"" of which he stands accused.
This should have been the end of the story but it was not. On Wednesday Peter Kent, the Environment Minister in the Harper government. In Norman Wells in the North West Territory Kent introduced Harper at a gathering at which Harper announced a new National Park in the north. It happened again. Kent introduced Harper as the Prime Minister of Cannibal. Kent explained that he had just been talking to Leef who had told him how he had goofed in his introduction.
Perhaps Conservatives are very subject to the power of suggestion. Maybe that is why business lobbyists are so successful in getting the Conervative government to pass laws that favor them. To give Harper his due he had a great response:. "So I hear my reputation precedes me."
Harper is fortunate that he was not called the Prime Minister of cannibis. Now that would really offend him since he is very much opposed to legalization of marijuana! For more see this article.
