Akin's gaffe gets bigger by the day

The presumptive nominee for president from the Republican Party, Mitt Romney, has spoken to Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) and asked him to consider dropping his run for the Senate in Missouri. Other people in his home state have also suggested that he consider the good of the party and drop out of the race, but he continues to ignore all pleas.

Akin's race is tarnished by a statement he made about women and rape that has angered and upset women everywhere and embarrassed his constituents and fellow GOP senators. A joint statement was issued by Missouri Sen. Blunt, former Senators Bond, Danforth and Talent and former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft urging him to step out of the race. Even the vice presidential candidate, Paul Ryan, has asked him to bow out of this race.

Akin made the rounds of the morning talk shows hoping to redeem himself but stood up Piers Morgan of CNN. Morgan said the invitation remained open any time Akins felt like keeping his promise. Morgan has called Akin a "gutless little twerp". Akins has announced that he will not attend the GOP convention in Tampa, Fla, acceding to the request of RNC Chairman Reince Priebus.

Whether or not Akin will try to improve his image through visiting Mike Huckabee and Sean Hannity on their shows is a question yet to be answered.

Akin intends to continue to pursue the Senate seat even though he no longer has his party’s backing. Should he decide to drop out, he will need to obtain a court order to step down because he missed yesterday’s deadline to do so voluntarily. He now has until Sept. 25 to reconsider his rejection of both personal and public pleas from friends and associates.
