22 August 2012 - In support of migrants’ rights and the regularization of status of Filipinos in Italy, the Philippine Embassy in Rome, in its monthly Thursday Forum held last August 09 discussed the upcoming Sanatoria for 2012 or Amnesty and Regularization of Undocumented Migrant Workers, per Italy’s Legislative Decree No. 109/2012.
The Embassy hosted 70 Filipino community leaders and members and invited resource persons and experts in immigration law, lawyers Valentina Chianello, Andrea De Rossi, and Paolo Rinaldi, and Ms. Annaliza Bueno to explain Italy’s Legislative Decree No. 109/2012, which came into effect on 09 August 2012. Mr. Chianello discussed the general provisions of the decree in detail. However, it was also mentioned that the Implementing Rules for the Sanatoria are expected to be released only by the end of August 2012. Employers’ applications for regularization of their undocumented workers in Italy will be accepted from September 15 to October 15, 2012.
The Filipino community members were able to raise their questions and concerns during the open forum, which was held in Italian, English, and Filipino. The Embassy emphasized the importance of being forthright in declaring one’s status and to ask for advice and assistance only from proper authorities.
Prior to the main discussion, the Embassy was also able to put forth its appeal for donations for the victims of typhoon Gener and the recent monsoon flooding that occurred in early August in many cities in Metro Manila and surrounding regions. Filipino community leaders were informed about their options for donating cash through institutions coordinating relief operations or donating goods.
