Republican congressman 'sorry' for skinny-dipping in Sea of Galilee

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz is reporting that more than 20 freshman congressmen and their staffers took a night-time dip last summer in the Sea of Galilee, one of whom did so sans any clothing. According to Politico, the FBI is at this point “asking questions,” but is this close to actually opening a formal investigation.

Republican congressman Kevin Yoder (R-Kan.) was on a “fact-finding” mission when he decided to take a skinny-dip in the historic Sea of Galilee almost exactly one year ago in August of 2011.

He was joined by more than 20 people, including several Republican lawmakers, staffers, and their families. The late night dip followed a rousing dinner at a Tiberius restaurant where the booze was reportedly flowing freely.

Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.), the senior guy in the delegation, admonished the group over their behavior. He was not one of the dippers, skinny or otherwise.

In its always dogged search for the truth, the FBI has questioned several people involved. The agency is searching for signs of wrongdoing. So far, it has found none.

Yoder has told Politico, “A year ago, my wife, Brooke, and I joined colleagues for dinner at the Sea of Galilee in Israel. After dinner I followed some members of Congress in a spontaneous and very brief dive into the sea and regrettably I jumped into the water without a swimsuit.”

Of course, he was “sorry for any embarrassment” that he may have caused his constituents.

This particular junket was sponsored by the American Israel Educational Foundation, an AIPAC-associated organization and was supposedly meant to just tour holy sites and meet with Israeli government officials. AIEF reportedly paid about $10,000 for each of the more than 60 people on the trip.

In a supreme case of rationalization, some of the congressmen said that they participated in the swim because of the "religious significance" of the site. This was the Sea of Galilee, after all.

The daughter of another congressman swam fully clothed while some lawmakers partially disrobed.

These folks represented a good chunk of all those Tea Party-backed candidates who stormed into Congress in 2010. Their election was the result of a number of events. Principally, though, their election was an obvious, if delayed, "white backlash" to Obama's election in 2008. These people have been nothing but obstructionists since their arrival in Washington. They have taken special pride in hamstringing, delaying, and blocking altogether each and every initiative, plan, proposal, bill that the administration puts forth -- even those they once supported. Thus, as their intrepid leaders have instructed them, their singular, avowed and virtually ordained-from-on-high goal in life is not the good and honest performance of their sworn constitutional duties. Rather, they are consumed by and committed solely and completely to the undermining, the defeat, the destruction of the Obama presidency.

Let's see if the pendulum will swing back again this November, and wash (whitewash?) the halls of congress clean of these "true" believers, who, apparently, just discovered that they cannot actually walk on water.
