Some ancient monasteries are dotted in Leh district also worth visit. Hemis is the most sacred and largest Ladakh monastery. It is located in Hemis town about 45 km away from Leh. It is believed that the monastery has been existed before 11th century. It was restored in the year of 1672 by ruler of Ladakh Kingdom, Sengge Namgyal. The monastery houses many vital stuffs related to Buddhism religion and culture including a huge copper guilt statue of Lord Buddha. Hemis Festival is the most popular annual Buddhist cultural event celebrated inside the monastery complex that receives thousands of devotees.

Alchi Gompa, Sankar Gompa, Spituk, Phyang Monastery, Jama Masjid, Shey Palace, Thiksey Monastery and Likir Gompa are the few other important heritage sites that you can visit in Ladakh.
