By hosting two cooking shows on television, Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej violated the ban on outside employment, the Constitution Court ruled today.
Samak was ordered to leave office immediately. In the interim, the first deputy prime minister, Somchai Wongsawat, will serve as caretaker PM.
Samak, who was elected premier in December and whose tenure in office has been marked by massive anti-government protests, could still return as PM, if Parliament appoints him. Samak's People's Power Party said it would return Samak to the premiership, and it would likely have the backing of other parties in its coalition.
Since May, anti-government protesters have been calling for Samak's ouster, saying he is a nominee for Thaksin Shinawatra, the former PM who was removed from power in a 2006 military coup.
