An actress who is nominated for an Emmy for her role on "The Big Bang Theory," suffered critical injuries today during a traffic crash in Hollywood. The collision happened just before noon on La Brea Avenue at Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles police Officer Karen Rayner said.

Mayim Bialik, 36, was heading south on La Brea when a driver of a northbound vehicle attempted to turn left on Hollywood Boulevard, crashing with the actress' car, almost a head-on collision, Rayner said.

Bialik suffered injuries to her hand and thumb were the result of airbags that set out in the crash, Rayner said. The occupants of the other vehicle were tourists from Chile, suffered only minor cuts and bruises, Rayner said.

No citations were issued, and no arrests were made, Rayner said.

Bialik came to prominence when she played the lead role on "Blossom." She is nominated for a supporting-actress Emmy this year for her role on CBS' "The Big Bang Theory," on which she portrays a neuroscientist. Bialik herself has a doctorate in neuroscience.
