Skooter reporting 08/17/12

In the popular Thai tourist destination of Phuket, a fire broke out at a nightclub, four people died and injured about a dozen others, police said. The blaze occurred early Friday morning at about 4:00 local time (21:00 GMT) at the Tiger disco. The cause of the fire could have been a lightning striking a transformer, officials said.

The Tiger club in the Patong beach area in Phuket is popular among both tourists and locals. It was reported that among the injured are French nationals, but the nationalities of those who died are not yet known.

Though the said disco club was closed, there were about 70 to 80 people taking shelter from rain at the time of the fire, an executive operating the venue said. He said there were at least three lightning strikes and brown-outs before the fire broke out.

In 2009 more than 60 people died in Bangkok after a blaze broke out at the Santika Club in the early hours of New Year’s Day. The owner of the club and another man were jailed last year.
