A female journalist in Pakistan committed suicide when she jumped from a six story building in Lahore after her employer refused to pay her salary of the third consecutive month.
Seemab, 30, was a lady reporter in a local Urdu Daily “Anti Crime” and was the sole sponsor of her family containing her old age father suffering from Cancer and her young brothers in schools.
“When administration of the paper refused to pay for the consecutive third month, she had no way but to kill herself” said a local journalist from Islamabad, Amer Hasmi in his statement to Press Pakistan.
“Eid festival has also reached and she had nothing to Shop for her family and treat her sick father” Hashmi wrote, adding that the owner of the hostel where they lived was also behind her for rent payment while she was unable paying the rent.
Semmab than decided to get rid of the day to day humiliations and jumped from a six storey building.
She was taken to the nearby hospital but she succumbed to her injuries while on the way to hospital.
Seemab is not only instance who has committed suicide due to non-payment of her dues, rather there are several instances where owner of media organizations don’t pay to the ournalists working with them.
In the same kind of circumstances a worker in another Urdu Daily Khabrain had committed suicide some two years back when he was refused to pay him his salary.
In Pakistan print media in proper and electronic media in general are notorious for non payment to their employees in spite of earning billions from the public and private sector aids.
Various unions of journalists and media organizations are wonderfully silent over the issue as every one has own benefits and no one like to bit his own leg with his own axe.(ihsan_dawar@yahoo.com)
