A female Vietnamese national was arrested at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) for attempting to smuggle almost three kilograms of methamphetamine hydrochloride, or shabu into the country.
Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Director General Undersecretary Jose S. Gutierrez Jr. identified the arrested foreign national as Duong Thi Yen, bearing Passport Number B6846684, who arrived in the country aboard Philippine Airlines flight PR 723 from Bangkok, Thailand.
The NAIA Inter-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group (NAIA-IADITG) conducted the interdiction operation at the NAIA Terminal 2 on Tuesday, August 14, 2012, at around 4:00 pm. Almost three kilograms of shabu were discovered from Yen’s luggage through a routine inspection conducted by the Duty Custom Examiner.
The arrest of Yen came on the heels of the arrest of another drug mule four days ago, identified as Sun Bahadur Tamang, a Nepalese national. Yen and Tamang both originated from Bangkok, Thailand. Yen is the 16th drug courier arrested by the NAIA-IADITG for this year.
The PDEA Chief once again commended the close coordination and strong collaboration among the members of the NAIA-IADITG, on the continuing success of intercepting illegal drugs at the NAIA complex.
Yen will face charges for Section 5 (Transportation of Dangerous Drugs), Article II, of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
Upon conviction, she is liable to suffer life imprisonment and a fine ranging from five hundred thousand pesos to ten million pesos.
