To some the Spice Girls are the best part ever happened to the London Olympic closing ceremonies, and most likely this is the first time the Olympic women's gymnasts heard of The Spice Girls music.
For the younger generation Spice Girls are a British pop girl group formed in 1994, just like they have One Direction now. The group comprised five members, who each later adopted nicknames: Melanie Chisholm ("Sporty Spice"), Emma Bunton ("Baby Spice"), Melanie Brown ("Scary Spice"), Victoria Beckham ("Posh Spice"), and Geri Halliwell ("Ginger Spice").
They were signed to Virgin Records and released their debut single, "Wannabe" in 1996, which hit number-one in more than 30 countries and helped establish the group as a global phenomenon just like Justin Bieber did as solo artist. Spice Girls brokeup in the 1998 when Ginger Spice' Geri Halliwell announced her departure from the group. The remaining Spice Girls members still continue their schedule North American tour without Halliwell.
But in December 2000, the group unofficially announced their indefinite hiatus and would be concentrating on their solo careers. Spice Girls reunite in June 2007, although has developed their own solo career. The Spice Girls performed a medley of "Wannabe" and "Spice Up Your Life" at the London 2012 closing ceremony, reuniting solely for the event.
David Beckham wife Victoria tweeted later, @victoriabeckham We did it!! I love u girls so much!!!!! xxx vb pic.twitter.com/ra1Yd5Tl
