If you opt to tour on a mountain bike, Nigel advised me, a great option is to drop your gear and take in some off-road mountain bike trails. Nigel added, among enthusiasts, the Witch’s Trails at Aonach Mor are spoken of in whispered terms. In southern Scotland is the 7stanes complex of seven mountain bike trail centers, and Kirroughtree in the Galloway Forrest Park is alleged to have the best singletrack in the country, he said. Now, he went on, if you’re planning to stay for a week of off-road adventure, you better sign up for a guided tour like the coast-to-coast Scottish mountain bike trips run by H&I Adventures.
Tips for a perfect Scottish cycle tour
In Scotland summer is the best time to go biking. There is little need for riding in the dark because it got longer days and shorter nights. I was surprised to learn that sunset can be as late as 10 pm. Very interesting indeed. Here are more surprises for an Asian like me. With a wry smile, Nigel said as if he was joking, be prepared for four seasons in one day though, and expect sunburn as well as snow outbreaks. And this was what I fear most, expect to combat insects. You mean - mosquitoes? He replied, absolutely no, we don’t have any of that here but Scottish midges are notorious for their bites.
Scotland’s 2003 Land Reform Act legislates a right to roam. Well, there is nothing new about that. In our country everybody have the right to wander around, no need to legislate anyway. I mean we are living in a democracy. But what the law means is there is a statutory presumption in favor of responsible non-motorized access such as walking, cycling, horse riding or canoeing to most land in Scotland. For cyclists, this is an advantage, opening up a massive range of wild campsites and making cycle routes a great deal flexible. Of course, you don’t have to worry about lodging accommodation there are lots of brilliant bed and breakfasts and country inns along the way, if you prefer to cycle Scotland in style.
That’s all folk!
