Ann Curry, who was replaced by another host in June, makes a return to NBC’s "Today" to be co-anchor alongside Matt Lauer in London.
The former co-host on NBC’s morning news show lost her job at the channel in June and was replaced by Savannah Guthrie. The anchor, however, made a come back on Thursday on the show’s set in what appeared to be an uneasy reunion with Matt Lauer, who sat next to her. The two had no on-air interaction with each other. While Curry seemed polite, her attitude appeared distant. Lauer said “nice to see you” at the outset and “good to see you" at the end, but Curry did not return either sentiment, Associated Press reports.
She barely made eye contact with co-host Lauer and word has it that she’s still holding it against him for not standing up for her when her bosses were booting her out of the show. The NBC News president says that Curry was ousted from the show because of the saggy ratings it was producing because her real passion laid somewhere else.
"I think [TODAY] was not where her real passion was . . . In her heart of hearts, I think she would admit that," NBC News president Steve Capus told The Hollywood Reporter of Curry, who kept mum when Lauer briefly interacted with her on the day of her exit. "I think her real passion is built around reporting on international stories . . . I think we’ve now come up with a role that will play to her strengths."
Curry, on the other hand, said that her bosses hated her for her perky outfits, shoes and not dying her grey hair.
"I'm encouraged by my bosses to wear these ridiculously high-heeled shoes because women say, 'I love your shoes!' So if it makes women happy, I'll wear them. But I'm still going to be me. . . I've tried to wear clogs and flats on TV and it hasn't gone well with my bosses," Curry said, according to a report by US Magazine.
Well, whatever the reason was, we can’t deny that NBC pulled this one pretty smartly. They had told us beforehand that Curry would be appearing on the show so that everyone would tune up to catch the awkwardness between the two hosts. This one wouldn’t hurt the ratings.
