The arrival of the south west monsoon or habagat in local term is a sign that rainy season is about to begin. This seasonal wind from the south west will attract cloud formations that will become rain. This rain will refresh the land from the intense heat of the summer season benefitting all the inhabitants. This will also supply us with the needed water to fill our dams for drinking and irrigation for our crops. So the arrival of the monsoon season is a blessing to all under normal condition. But if it will be intensified by some natural force of nature like a typhoon or a low pressure area it will become a curse.

That just what happened two weeks ago. The typhoon Gener intensified monsoon combined with a shallow low pressure area that produced a rare weather phenomenon called MESO SCALE CYCLONE or monsoon surge. This wrecked havoc in central and southern Luzon, that damaged properties and ended lives.

Now that we are not yet fully recovered from the monsoon surge the monsoon is being intensified by a typhoon outside the country, making it a SUPER MONSOON.The typhoon named Haikui is in southern China but its force is absorbing the monsoon inside the country intensifying its rain and wind. This accounted for the flooding in the entire NCR (national capital region) and nearby provinces. The dams in different parts of Luzon became in danger of overflowing that forced theoperators to open the spill ways. The excess water flowed in the already filled up river system whose water in turn flowed in the low lying areas of NCR. This caused flooding as high as a two storey bldg. in many places.

Up until this writing many people are still in danger. They are trapped on the roof of their houses, they could not go to the evacuation centers bec. the flood is too high. The LGUs (local goverment units) has only limited resources to rescue all those on the roof. They would have to pray hard for the rain to stop so that the flood would subside. Sometimes in this time of calamity prayers is the only option left for many victims.

Flooding is a perrenial problem of the country the goverment should have known by now how to caution its impact. We could not prevent the occurence of inclement weathers but we could lessen its effect.Desilting of river basins; removal of obstruction on river banks and esteros; reforestation of our mountains; segragation and recycling of our garbages are some of the options the goverment and the people should undertake to lessen the effect of flooding in our country. If we will not act now we would always be in the mercy of God and nature during monsoon season.
