Pasir Mas, Malaysia (07 Aug 2012) : Kelantan Pan Malaysia Islamic Party (PAS) is confident that Umno's preparation to settle down the claim of petroleum royalty to Kelantan government as they are afraid of youth votes to support PAS in the 13th general election.
State PAS election director Wan Nik Wan Yusof said Kelantan Umno feel they were legged behind in looking after welfare for the people in the state.
"Hence, they try the efford to make the people pleasure in facing the coming general election," he explained.
According to Wan Nik, Kelantan Umno feel as if they were at the loosing side if they do not take part in the peoples' welfare issue to attract young peoples' mood to support NGO for the claim of petroleum royalty.
The 5% petroelum royalty to Kelantan was fixed in 1975 when the petroleum was found in offshore around the Kelantan water.
Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah who was then Malaysia Finacial Minister was involved in the agreement with Petronas on behalf of the Federal government.
Meanwhile, the former chief justice Tun Salleh Abas was one of the persons who made the legal procedure regarding to the agreement.
However, the agreement for royalty was later stopped by former fourth Perime Minister Dr Mahethir Mohamed when he changed the term of royalty to the 'wang ehsan' (kindness money) and was ordered to be given to Terengganu and not to Kelantan which was under PAS.
Wan Nik said this in response to Kelantan Umno chief Datuk Mustapa Mohamad stament recently that Kelantan Umno is trying to settle the petroleum royalty issue soon.- ends
