The Social Network

Social networking has nowadays a major role to play in our society. In these days of Orkut, Facebook, G-Talk, Yahoo Messenger, Linked in ,Wayne and many such social networking , ‘Friendship’ is a keyword. People of all ranks seem to engage themselves in the social networking bandwagon. In spite of so much surfing and chatting, true friendship is missing. Bygone are the days of morning or evening newspapers. People now wake up each day and check social websites first thing in the morning instead of reaching for a newspaper. American Internet users spend more than 22 percent of their online time using a social networking site.

True friends are not easily found , but life is an awful and ugly place not to have a best friend. Today , the word best friend usually means ‘fiance’ or ‘fiancee’. But husbands or wives are rarely good friends in the story of long sharing . Life a long journey, and we need true friends to make life’s journey comfortable. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, is indeed a friend who cares.

It was Shakespeare who wrote poems of Friendship when the Elizabethan England was inundated with love poems. Amorous verses of Petrarch mesmerized all in the Elizabethan England. But Shakespeare wrote friendship poems for his Fair Friend. Love may come and love may go, but friendship will endure for ever. True love is possible when there is friendship. For Shakespeare friendship is a marriage of true minds and it admits no impediments. If we make friends with stupid people, we may feel much clever. But it is said that you had better go to Hell with a number of wise friends than to Heaven with a number of foolish ones. Good friends are more than philosophers , they are guide to us. There is no sorry said , so forgiveness asked, so apology if true friendship occurs. Albert Camus made it clear more clear than many others when he defined friendship : “ Don’t walk behind me; I may not lead. Don’t walk in front of me; I may not follow.Just walk beside me and be my friend’. In politics friendship is very much uncertain. Today’s friend is tomorrow’s foe. In business, friendship is purposive based on material consideration. People of some nations are more friendly than others. The Americans, in the general Indian opinion, make friends easily and break friendship with a greater ease. The British are very much conservative in opening their minds and once they become friends, it is not that fragile as that of the Americans. These are all guess works of the Indians but may be called ‘exaggeration of some vital truths’. . Americans or British – men having various moods and temperaments become friends under certain circumstances. The mystique of friendship is very difficult to decipher even on the Friendship Day.Since people are spending such a large amount of time surfing social networks, it is important to point out some of the positive and negative effects that social networking can have on a society.
