Dick Warren, the owner of the Tasmania Zoo was shocked when he opened the gates in the morning and discovered dead birds and animals lying about. More than 60 animals are missing.

The locks of the cages had been cut by a chain saw and the birds were killed ruthlessly by beating their heads against the walls or by tearing off their heads.
It was a terrible sight.
It seems two rare swift parrots, a yellow-tailed black cockatoo and five quolls apart from a carnivorous native cat had escaped and were on the loose.
It came as a blow for the zoo's breeding programmes of endangered species.
The zoo is involved in the national breeding programme for the endangered Tasmanian devil, which is apparently nearly extinct in the wild as a result of a contagious facial tumour.
