NHK - Panetta urges Israel to use diplomacy for Iran
Panetta urges Israel to use diplomacy for Iran US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has called on Israel to exercise restraint over Iran's nuclear development. Panetta, now visiting Israel, met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Wednesday. At a joint news conference with Barak later in the day, Panetta stressed that US and European sanctions are having an effect on Iran. He said all non-military measures should be exhausted before turning to a military option. At a separate news conference with Netanyahu, Panetta said the US is committed to resolving Iran's nuclear issue. He said the US is considering all options to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Netanyahu said both sanctions and diplomacy have failed to get Iran to give up its nuclear programs. He said time to resolve the issue peacefully is running out. He also said foreign countries have not put enough pressure on Iran and that Israel won't hesitate to attack its nuclear facilities.
