They lost bowl games, over a decade of wins were forfeited, they lost scholarships, and they were fined $60M. It wasn't the "Death Penalty" that SMU suffered, but it's arguably much worse. That's upsetting Jerry Sandusky, who had to hear about the sanctions from his jail cell, while waiting for his sentencing hearing in a couple months. Unfortunately for Sandusky and countless amounts of children that were victims of his abuse, this is something that Sandusky completely overlooked during his years of child molestation.
