Another fresh man law student from San Beda College became the latest death victtim of initiation rites hazing. Just last february Marvin Reglos another fresh man law student from the same school also died bec. of hazing in initiation rites. Some were quick in blaming school authorities for their failure to prevent these crimes. But the truth is, it were impossible for them to prevent these incidents bec. the actual crimes were commited outside the campus where they have no jurisdiction. The school authorities have the power to supervise initiation rites under the anti-hazing law. But it would be impossible for them to know where and when the actual initiation would happen. The officers of the fraternities would not give them this imformation bec. it would spoil the excitement of the event. If the authorities will force them to give the schedule it would be useless bec. the officers would just postpone it for another convenient time.
One of the senators is now planning to pass a law in congress banning all initiation rites to prevent another senseless death. But initiation rites is a tradition,if you will remove this you might as well all together ban fratenity movement in all campuses, which would also be impossible.Initiation rites and fraternities is like sugar and coffee they would be useless without each other.
The best solution according to some law makers is to amend the anti-hazing law to make the officers of fraternities directly responsible for the death of a neophyte during and after the initiation. If it will be proven that the death was caused by injuries suffered during the initiation. This will make the officers more responsible in assuring that the initiation will be conducted humanely. It would be command responsibility on their part. If they will be negligent they should be ready to suffer the consequences.
Honest to goodness implementation of the law will also contribute greatly in the prevention of initiation hazing death. Until now after twenty years of the existence of the anti hazing law no accused were ever convicted. Some are saying that this is due to the protection being given to the accused by their influential frat brods. in politics. If some will be convicted and be put to jail, those who will conduct initiation rites will think twice before putting the lives of their potential brothers in danger.
