Former Indonesian president Suharto is laid to rest

WONG: Former Indonesian president Suharto has been laid to rest. The "Strongman" passed away Sunday and was buried in a massive state funeral. Our Indonesian team has more. STORY: Tens of thousands of people lined the roads around Indonesia's royal city of Solo for the state funeral today. Suharto's body was flown to Solo from Jakarta earlier in the day, and then driven to the family mausoleum at Giribangun. Suharto's coffin was then lowered into his grave, next to that of his wife, who died in 1996. He leaves a controversial legacy after 32 years in power. He is praised by many as a visionary who helped modernize his country. But he was also heavily criticized for widespread corruption and human rights abuses. He crushed the country's communist movement when he came to power in 1965. His rule ended amid social chaos and mass rallies calling for his resignation. [Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Indonesian President]: "We have lost one of the best people in our nation--a person who was a real and loyal fighter and a person that has been respectful to the nation." The news of Suharto's passing spread very fast. Within hours of his death hundreds of journalists and thousands of people gathered at Suharto's house.
