America’s oldest general store, Gray’s Store, which was opened 224 years ago before George Washington took oath as the first president of the US, has shut down. The store started its journey in the small village of Adamsville in Rhode Island in 1788 by selling penny candy, cigars, groceries, antiques and collectible knickknacks, reported the Times of India. The business has been owned by the Waite family since 1879.
Many people gathered outside the store on Sunday morning to bid the final goodbye, reported the Herald News. Gray’s Store’s current owner, Jonah Waite, a 21-year-old journalism student decided to close the shop after his father, 59-year-old Grayton Waite died of cancer last month.
